NEWS -- Week of Oct. 9-15, 2000(all items in reverse chronological order)Friday, Oct. 13 -- Today is Samantha Rose Kolovson's Un-Birthday... and she's still celebrating her 15-minutes of fame from yesterday being mentioned with her dad in The Boston Globe West section story about our playground. She nicknamed the playground for our family, the "Hollow Log Playground" because when she discovered the "space tunnel" we were reading her a Winnie-the-Pooh story where Pooh and friends hide from Tigger in a hollow log. Here she is yesterday (Thursday) in front of our new banner now installed at the playground. Thank you Alltype Signs and Graphics of Natick for the donation of the banner!
Thank you Boston Globe, but also, thank you Town Crier -- we had wonderful coverage in both papers today, plus letters to the editor on the topic. Click here to see Cliff Kolovson's letter. Fundraisinig projects kick off today with our Buy-A-Brick campaign (click here to download a PDF of the form). Next week we'll announce the T-shirt (long sleeve) program. We're now taking order for the engraved brick pavers ($100 each with three lines of words). Plus, you should consider signing up for one of NINE portrait sittings with the Robbs of Wayland Portrait Photographers -- click here for details -- family portraits guaranteed to be ready for the holidays. Remember: all donations to Friends of Hannah Williams Playground are tax deductible! Our first official group work party is tomorrow after school when we've appealed for high schoolers to help clean up the site and dig around the structures to prepare for new substrate. Remember, next weekend is the first big, all-community work days Oct. 21 and 22, we expect to be able to provide babysitting on site while parents work! Wednesday, Oct 11 -- Three special fundraising efforts are being launched to raise the $18,000 need for all three phases of the repair and enhancement of the playground. The fundraising committee last night decided that in addition to seeking corporate/private donations, we'll sell engraved brick pavers ($100 each with three lines of words) and long-sleeve T-shirts. The group also endorsed a special fund-raising program offered by the Robbs of Wayland Portrait Photographers -- click here for details -- family portraits guaranteed to be ready for the holidays. Remember: all donations to Friends of Hannah Williams Playground are tax deductible! We also reported our progress to the Parks & Recreation Commission which was met with favorable reviews. We are looking for a crew (how about it High School students looking for community service hours) to work this Friday afternoon, starting at about 2:30 to begin the process of digging out the pebble stone and dirt in and around the structures. Anyone interested should contact Ted Fiust at the site. Plus, as we plan for the big work days Oct. 21 and 22, we expect to be able to provide babysitting on site while parents work! Today we also heard from the treasurer of the Arthur Ashley Williams Foundation which established the Hannah Williams Park approximately 50 years ago! The foundation is interested in our efforts and may help us out! More as it becomes known! Tuesday, Oct 10 -- Back from the holiday weekend, and work continues on preparing the playground site for repairs. One of the immediate priorities is FUNDRAISING. There's a meeting TONIGHT -- please volunteer. We need to bring in some cash very fast so we can order the materials needed. Note: all donations to Friends of Hannah Williams Playground are tax deductible! Every penny goes toward the repair and maintenance -- there are no management fees or outside consultants being used. There are only volunteers. Thanks to a couple of volunteers, we've entered nearly all the names on letters and petitions in our database so we can keep people up to date, and schedule volunteers. Keep your comments coming in... and be sure, if you haven't already, SIGN UP TO HELP. Watch for a big banner to go up at the playground next week, donated by Alltype Signs and Graphics of Natick -- thank you Jon Grocer (a Wayland native) who was very enthusiastic about helping out!
