Hannah Williams
Playground Is Open -- Enjoy!

NEWS -- April, 2001

(all items in reverse chronological order)

Late April, early May -- Town Crier article -- Linda Segal thanked Cliff Kolovson and Ilene Knopping for their service on the project... "we" (yes, "we" do the web site)... thank Linda and all others for their fine wishes.

WAYLAND, MA, Thursday, April 26, 2001 – Read at Town Meeting under Article 1: Recognize Citizens…. For Extensive Service to the Town

Cliff Kolovson, 26 Garden Path
I move to recognize citizen Ted Fiust of Mathews Drive for unusual personal effort and sacrifice to engineer, direct, and affect the repairs of the Hannah Williams Playground that ensured its reopening last Thanksgiving after a year-and-a-half of closure. Many others gave their time, their financial help and their emotional support to this effort. Ted was the embodiment of those many citizens – there at dawn, still working after dark with a headlamp – weekdays and weekends. Citizens from all corners of town, from every trade and business, from every age group. They deserve recognition and public thanks. Thanks also to those who conceived and built this wonderous play structure, and to those who gave the precious space for townspeople to enjoy for many generations.

WAYLAND, MA, Sunday, April 22, 2001 – This weekend has been fantastic... not only did the weather bring us instant summer on Sunday... we also have two new picnic tables courtesy of Greg Burke of Waylandl! Thanks also to Jeff Fiske for helping your editor collect the materials needed on Saturday. Enjoy all!

Installed and ready for lunches!

The artist, Greg Burke, and our official table testers!

WAYLAND, MA, Thursday, April 19, 2001 – Spring is finally showing itself and the playground has been packed with kids of all ages! While much of the repair has been done, there's still a bit to do.... finish moving wood chips (which everyone is encouraged to come and do while the kids are playing)... and more!

Fundraising also is continuing. With your help, we have achieved our initial goals, and now are adding some improvements (new fencing, gate, porta-potty, bike rack, picnic tables). A daunting task and expense is the ongoing yearly maintenance. Our budget calls for several thousand dollars a year for several years.

Here are some of the events coming up in which you can participate to support the playground. Tell your neighbors, tell your friends....

1. Sixth Annual WCPA Picnic Basket Auction
Sunday April 29, 4-7 pm
Wayland Town Building Gym

Picnic baskets will be available from 4-5 pm to display as well as for silent auction bidding. At 5, additional baskets will be auctioned in a live auction. There will also be a moonwalk, balloons and crafts for the kids.

The WCPA will be donating all proceeds from this event to the Hannah Williams Playground! So come and enjoy and support the playground and the WCPA.

2. Wayland Community Day Celebration
Saturday, May 5, 3-5 pm
Hannah Williams Playground

The Friends of Hannah Williams will be participating this year. We plan on having live music, balloons, face painting and food. We’ll also have new, short-sleeve T-shirts and “Frisbee” rings for sale!

We are currently looking for volunteers to assist in this event. Please contact Sherri Way at 508-788-0191 or way@mediaone.net.

3. Rededication Ceremony
June – date to be announced

We are planning a rededication ceremony for the playground once the new walkway bricks are in place. Keep your eye on the Web site for additional information. If you would like to help plan this event, please contact Sherri Way at 508-788-0191 or way@mediaone.net.

We are always looking for additional ideas. Contact Sherri Way if you have any additional ideas for fund raising.

WAYLAND, MA, Monday, April 9, 2001 – Good weather coming.... even in dreary conditions, the playground has been packed with kids. We love it! Enjoy!

The town's Park & Rec Dept. took away the old chain link fence between the playground and the gazebo and smoothed over the wall with dirt and grass seed... STAY OFF that new soil for now! Thanks guys!

There are still things happening... we need help spreading the wood fiber chips... bring a wheelbarrow, rake, etc. and go at it.... Move chips from the rear right to the rear left... smooth things out under the swings... do this anytime you feel like it and have time for it!

Here's what else is happening!

Fundraising -- we aim to have a special, one-of-a-kind beer dinner at JJ McKays with Grant Wood, master brewer for Boston Beer Company (brewers of Sam Adams). Details (including the date) to come.

We're also planning a shindig for Community Day, May 5 at the playground. Details to come... may involve music at the gazebo... new Tshirts, beachballs on sale!

BTW: Brick sales are NOW CLOSED! Sorry... watch for delivery in mid-to-late May. Rededication in June.

STAY TUNED!!!! (And have fun at the playground.)
