NEWS -- 2002 UpdatesJuly 23, 2002The wood sealant treatment is DONE! But, the play structure now needs 24-48 or more hours to completely dry! PLEASE STAY OUT OF THE PLAYGROUND. Watch the signs. And please.... help keep the park clean... pick up trash even if it's not yours. Plastic doesn't biodegrade... straws, cups, chip bags.... please put them in the trash cans provided. Thanks. Enjoy! July 10, 2002The annual wood sealant treatment will begin Monday, July 22 (weather permitting) -- which means the playground WILL BE CLOSED while the painters work and for about 24 hours after they are done! Watch for the signs. Also, an interesting note: a young lady in Australia -- Hannah Williams -- watches our progress regularly (we must be quite entertaining---Hi Hannah!) Soon she'll be getting one of our long-sleeve T-shirts--after all it's now winter down under! We hope we didn't ruin a surprise! Send us a photo of yourself! All the best ! June 23, 2002Soon, we'll be looking for volunteers to help with some minor projects at the playground. Please contact Cliff Kolovson, 508-655-2957 to volunteer. Meanwhile.... we've had a request for directions for those visiting from out of town! The playground is on Main St. (Rte. 27) in Wayland, MA just 40 yards north of Commonwealth Road (Rte. 30), on the east side of the road. Enjoy! April 22, 2002If you visit the playground this morning, you'll find 4 new picnic tables about! Thank you to Greg Burke, our master carpenter (second from left in photo below), who made all six tables found at the playground and park. Not only did Greg donate his time for making all the tables... he also gave us several hours of carpentry expertise on the playground structure itself! Greg made the four new picnic tables this weekend. The materials for these were a gift from the Wayland Business Association -- thank you to their members also! Each table uses a recycled plastic decking material for the tops and seats -- so no splinters!
You'll also notice that the town is in the process of installing new swings! You can see the work area in the photo above surrounded by orange netting. This weekend the Parks & Rec. crews removed the old and started to dig holes for the new. Soon we should have a full complement of six swings. Come and enjoy!!!!
April 3, 2002The toilet's back -- the season's started! That said, please -- even though parking's tight -- don't block the service gate.... the town and the toilet company must get in regularly to perform maintenance. New swings are at the town garage and will be installed this spring by the Parks & Recreation Department. Also, 4 more picnic tables are under construction and will be delivered soon. Volunteer opportunities:
Also notice that three new benches have been permanently installed around the play area. These were donated some time ago by the Cochituate Preservation Association and were in storage pending restoration of the playground. March 26, 2002Spring is here -- at least by the calendar! The mild winter meant a lot of activity on the playground, and it's held up beautifully. We'll begin spring fix-ups soon. We'll need another coat of wood sealer, some board replacement and other touch-ups. The great news over the winter is that the Parks & Rec Dept. is getting us new swings! They are scheduled for installation soon. We've ordered up the Port-A-Potty for next week! Another sure sign of spring! Watch for news about work days at the playground and maybe some spring events! Dec. 19, 2001As always, thanks all for help, support and interest. The playground had a great year -- and not a single piece has broken yet! Summary: We finished the brick walkway and the primary fencing with gates during the spring. The Recreation Commission installed three benches donated years ago by the CPA for the park and playground. We added signage and held a rededication ceremony at the start of school this fall. The rest is enjoyment! History: Late this fall, we also received some unique historical information from relatives of Hannah Williams and her family. Please click here to see some of what we've received. We'd be very pleased to have more information related to the property and its history.... photos, postcards, stories, anything. News Notes: Soon, perhaps as soon as Spring Town Meeting, watch for new zoning by laws related to the Cochituate Business District. While this does NOT DIRECTLY affect the playground, it will deal with issues concerning the village atmosphere and parking. Ultimately, development of the area will have an impact on our gem! Spring: Next spring we'll likely need a crew to help with some board replacement, minor fix-ups and more. Watch for news and prepare to volunteer. We're still planning to add some small flags/banners to the tower peaks... Donations: YES -- WE STILL WOULD LIKE DONATIONS! The more we have, the more we can do. Every penny goes toward the playground... there is no overhead. If you have any year-end gifts... we'd be honored to be the recipient! Note: there are still t-shirts and Whiz Rings available!!! Call The Kolovsons -- 508-655-2957.
